Happy 40th Birthday, Cellphone!
Exactly forty years ago today, a Motorola engineer named Marty Cooper placed the first mobile phone call ever using a 9-inch tall and 2.5 pound Motorola DynaTAC 8000x. At the receiving end of this historic phone call was Joel Engel, the head of rival research department at Bell Labs, who probably wasn’t as delighted to hear Cooper’s voice. To celebrate how far we’ve come, check out these nesting historical phones created by British artist Kyle Bean and be sure to read The Verge’s exclusive interview with Marty Cooper.
